yes by now you have probably heard about it quite a bit, especially since Wikipedia decided to go blackout for a day in protest :
[link]
But the fact is, it's a VERY dangerous bill. If it passes, Internet won't be the same.... Entire sites could be blocked on the mere suspicion of hosting content that use copyrighted elements, such as a music in a video clip for example. Needless to say you could kiss Youtube goodbye.
and you can bet a lot of big companies would see that as a BIG precedent and that would only become the first step of many restrictive laws to come. It's not really about copyright protection here. It's about liberty. Internet should remain free period, it's one of the latest space of genuine liberty that remains.
It's great to see that bill is meeting huge resistance and is running into serious troubles but you can bet that the people behind it won't relent their assault.
So what you can do ? It's easy : speak about it ! Spread the word about that bill, talk to your friends, your family

Or even better, contact your representatives about it. If I was a US citizen I would definitely do that.
What SOPA is about :
[link]A video summing it :
[link]The IP Act (S.968 - PROTECT IP Act of 2011) establishes a system for taking down websites that the Justice Department determines to be "dedicated to infringing activities." The DoJ or the copyright owner would be able to commence a legal action against the alleged infringer and the DoJ would be allowed to demand that search engines, social networking sites and domain name services block access to the targeted site. In some cases, action could be taken to block sites without first allowing the alleged infringer to defend themselves in court. The PROTECT IP Act would allow copyright owners movie studios and other content providers simply to accuse a website of infringement, which could lead to that site being shut down by court order and entire links to the site being wiped clean from the Internet. The bill is so poorly written that it would allow any copyright owner to shut down a legitimate retail website, such as Amazon or Best Buy, by alleging that one product being sold on the site could "enable or facilitate" an infringement. It could even allow any content owner to block access to the Patent Office website if it receives and posts a patent application for a product that is believed to use content without permission. The PROTECT IP Act will hurt American innovation. This bill will give one side the power to put the other side out of business and this is dangerous beyond words.
And if you are not convinced yet that this thing is a terrible bill, Rupert Murdoch himself came heavily on the side of SOPA, lambasting the web for trying to sink a measure that would "defend creativity".... such an ardent and *honest* protector of liberty this man <3
If THAT is not enough to convince you, I don't know what would XD
