Attention soldiers by Karbo Attention soldiers by Karbo
Some Isolon fist troops during an inspection in Negav. The elf in the right is one of the two battlemages that are normally  assigned to a battalion (… )
I was thinking about the speech of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman when I was sketching this one XD
I might try some more of those casual pictures depicting everyday life in Felarya :3

There are a great many things I like about this piece. It is will composed and easily gets across the point of a commander of sorts giving a speech or berating his soldiers... but images of commanders in front of their armies are, while not overdone, not uncommon.

Overall the technique is good. The line quality is sharp, with some sketchy quality adding some textural flavor where needed, like the lines on the commanders cloak under his arm. The characters are diverse, with no copypastas to be seen in the ranks. The only critique of the scene that I can muster has to do with colors, in that the lower portion of the scene is a bit dull, fully saturated with earth tones and with little contrast. The flag brings a little color to it and the mage's and commander's cloaks bring some light to the field, but otherwise its pretty dark.

Speaking of light, the city in the background immediately drew my eye(not a pun I swear) with its bright contrast to the bottom half of the scene. Its got a utopian sort of feel to it I like. It also drew two things to my attention. The wall in the foreground(behind the soldiers) and the rock spires in the background have more textural detail than the city, which seems to be of whitewashed stone. This could be a testament to how smooth the buildings are, so it might not be a bad thing. The second thing that came to my attention was that there seems to be no specific direction the lighting in the scene.

The lighting in this scene is easily the only real gripe I have about this piece. For the sake of perspective, lets suppose all of the soldiers are facing south. The rock spires in the far background seem to be getting hit by sunlight from the north west. The buildings on the right side of the middle-ground seem to get hit from a much more westerly direction than the towers of the wall in the near foreground, which are being lit from the NW. All of the soldiers seem to be standing in a large shadow, with some minor shadowing going on(suggesting light from the west) but not enough to give me the impression of sunlight, rather they seem to be lit by the ambient light that keeps a shadow from being pitch black. Pushing the lights and darks(and thus improving the lack of contrast I mentioned earlier) could have helped to alleviate this. It is made most noticeable with the elf mage, who's cloak is almost entirely the same color as the commander's cape, only it is nearly monochromed with the shadowy color of the commander's[cloak] cell shading. Pushing the brightness of that little highlight on the hood would have helped immensely.

Overall very pretty and visually interesting. Better than I can do at any rate.

The soldiers bear a resemblance to imperial guardsmen... given what I imagine the casualties must be like, it's fitting

Ah, good old Sergeant Gunny. That guy is awesome. But I do have to say I like the inner look at the people who live in this weird world of yours.
