Alastazia Lesona by Karbo Alastazia Lesona by Karbo
A portrait of Lady Alastazia Lesona, Leader of the Negav Magiocrats ( [link] )
I tried to highlight that sweet, gentle and caring nature you can feel in the manga XD

Very different style than what I do usually. I watched this video : [link] and after I pulled my jaw back into place, I had this sudden urge to make some attempts at more realistic painting portraits.. so yeah here goes. My first painted portrait ^^ ;
I hope you like it ! Don't hesitate if you have any criticism or remarks, I'm very much in learning phase here :)

First thing to say about this image is that when I saw it, I was quite gobsmacked, and stared at it dumbly for a few moments before pulling myself together enough to decide that I absolutely had to write something long and detailed on it. So here it is.

The new style is, putting it mildly, beautiful. The extra definition of Lesona's face brings the painting to life in a manner which (to me) can never be entirely conveyed through "traditional," flat anime faces. That having said, whilst employing a realistic colouring method, you very effectively retain her "unrealistic," anime style features, and yet they continue to look relatively natural. The nose in particular is beautiful. (Which may sound a little odd, but it is.)

The picture of a woman holding a fan in this type of setting isn't hugely original, but that doesn't seem to be what the aim of the picture was. You wanted to get across her innocent side and you've certainly done so - whilst the raised fan and yellow eyes suggest that underneath the big sweet eyes the character may be hiding something.

In addition, the added depth to the picture as well as definition to features you normally focus on little or not at all - in particular the lips - make it clear that despite the "cute," features, the character is a woman and definitely not a child, which is a very significant improvement indeed. (In some of your other works, were the characters not so well-endowed it might be very difficult to tell.) Here you actually show this without revealing the tell-tale body at all - to me this is something I'm not sure you would have been able to pull off earlier, and you have done so without many alterations to your own trademark anime style.

Overall the technique is sound, particularly if this is your first time using this style. I'll point out the most obvious issue - the hand. You're used to portraying hands in a "flat," way, which works fine for your other pictures, but here poses something of a problem. The fingers are too smooth - if you're going for realistic shading, at this distance it should be possible to see the lines and definitions of the knuckles. Also the pose of the hand is odd. It looks a little unnatural and uncomfortable, the way in which one finger is bent considerably whilst the others remain flat - I think the solution here might be to look at hands in different poses and perspectives. (As right now it appears as though you might have showed her hand sideways as an annoyance that you didn't really want to deal with. xD)

Other than that, I'd say in some ways the picture looks sharper and clearer in small size, and loses a little of that when viewing fullsize - the brush strokes become more evident and look less clean, although then again this only applies to certain parts of the image, most notably her hair (which when viewed in small-size looks stunning.) I'm not entirely sure what the solution is here, but these are my observations.

If you use any more of this style in future (which I very much hope you do) then I'd say maybe make even more of the lips than you already have. Here the character's mouth, while serving a definite function, and doing it well, still seems perhaps a tad too small or thin. It works here, but don't be scared of adding a bit more "attitude," to the lips should the picture call for it - they're a very expressive part of real people which I sometimes miss in the flood of anime-style pictures on DA. That having said, most of your characters have a similar face shape - and nose, lips ect. - which don't call for much emphasis on these features. Still, if you're trying out new things, it can't hurt to experiment a little with different face shapes and features. Variety is the spice of life. ^^

This picture may hold particular appeal to people to whom that little bit of "realism," adds a great deal to the impact and enjoyment of the picture. It's not what you usually do, but you've done it very well, and it would be wonderful to see more like this should you decide to take the new style further.

I wouldn't trust her though.

Unquestionably brilliant. The best part is, looking at this...you forget she's the leading villain in your manga. I always thought you came up with a masterful villain for your comic in Lesona, reminding me even of heavyweights like Doctor Doom, and this only ENHANCES that mystique. A cold, calculating mind beind an elegant, beautiful face.

This is simply amazing. I'm glad you did a portrait of Lady Lesona, now I have a MUCH better idea of what she looks like! The nose and hair stuck out to me. Her nose is very detailed to show her youth and her hair appears to be glowing. I also like the rune-like design on the fan. :love: :love: :love:
On an unrelated note, since you went for realism, why is she purple?

Once again you did an amazing job, keep up the good work!
